Hall County Attorney Office is Hiring a Deputy County Attorney Near Grand Island, NE

NATURE OF WORK

This is a beginning level professional legal work as an attorney on the County Attorney’s legal staff preparatory to assuming the more independent duties of an Attorney II.

Work involves performing professional legal work with some supervision initially by more experienced attorneys. The major emphasis of the duties of this class may include preparation of criminal and civil cases for trial in courts of original jurisdiction; trying cases with some supervision; and assisting in the preparation and presentation of felony criminal cases in district and appellate courts. Work of employees in this class is subject to more supervision than that of an Attorney II; less independence is allowed in the conduct of trial work’ and the nature of the work less difficult and demanding. An employee in this class receives supervision in the form of trial support and consultation from an attorney of higher level who evaluates work in terms of the effectiveness of the preparation and/or presentation of cases and the soundness of legal opinions.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Prepares brief for presentation to court in suits involving the County.

Performing coroner duties as directed and being ‘on-call’ 24 hours a day for a one week period as part of the regular on-call rotation in the County Attorney’s office.

Prepares and prosecutes misdemeanor and felony cases with some supervision and assists others in doing so.

Prepares and prosecutes all types of juvenile cases.

Consults with and reviews work on preparation of cases with more experiences attorneys in order to learn departmental practices and procedures.

Interviews clients, their families, expert witnesses and others.

Prepares legal opinions, memoranda and data for other attorneys in order to learn departmental practices and procedures.

Assists other attorneys in preparation for the prosecution of felony criminal cases and appellate court.

Researches the law and writes memorandums and briefs for presentation in juvenile and misdemeanor cases.

Participates in mandatory continuing legal education of 20 hours per year and attends education training workshops and seminars as necessary.

Acts as County Coroner and ascertains cause and manner of death. Attends crime scenes and must be able to walk up to one mile over broken ground in all types of weather.

Performs related work as assigned.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of constitutional law, state statutory law and court rules.

Skills in the use of modern office equipment including personal computers and related peripheral, facsimile machine, and photo copying equipment.

Knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence and court rules.

Some knowledge of the organization, functions and legal provisions affecting the operations of County departments.

Ability to analyze, appraise and organize the facts, evidence and precedents concerned in cases; and to present such material orally and in writing in clear and logical form.

Ability to present and argue cases in court and assist more experienced attorneys in doing so.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited College of Law and some experience in preparing and presenting court cases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited College of Law or any equivalent combination thereof.

Obtain and maintain Nebraska State Bar license.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

Licensed to practice law in the State of Nebraska.

Obtain and maintain Nebraska driver license.

Reside within 30 minutes of the office when on-call.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35.73 - $46.63 per hour

Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week
